5 Suggested ways to learn Arabic letters pronunciation

A lot of Arabic language learners have difficulties with the pronunciation of the letters, especially that some letters seem to have the same sound.

In this article, we will  suggest you 5 different ways to have a better pronunciation of the letters; that we think it will help a lot.

But before you start learning Arabic you need to know that there are multiple dialects in the Arabe world; and sometimes more than just one in the same country. So, My advice to you is as follows:

  • If you want to learn Arabic because you want to travel to a particular country; to live in or to work in ...; Then you need to learn general Arabic which is basics; like: names, verbs, grammar, and vocabulary; Then extend to the dialect of that particular country.
  • If you want to learn Arabic for formal or educative purposes  ( like business, job, studies or any other formal event)  Then you need to learn Classic Arabic which is Fosha Arabic.
  • If you want to learn Arabic for Islam ( religion: to read Quo'ran)  Then you defiantly need to learn Arabic Fosha (aka classic , formal Arabic ).
And now,
  1. Know the exits of the letters:
  2. Listen and repeat :
  3. Practice:
  4. Read out loud :
  5. Make friends with a native speaker.

1. Know the exits of the letters :
After having memorized all Arabic letters shapes, you need to know that there are 5 main Makharij (Articulation points/places of letters) in Arabic where the sounds are made.

There are plenty of methods to Learn how to pronounce Arabic letters :
The oral and throat cavities , the throat, the tongue, the lips and the nasal cavity.

In order to understand and learn more about Makharij  I have brought you a pdf file from www.annoorquranacademy.org that I think explains it all perfectly.

The file

And a video where you can practice and know exactly how to pronounce them:

   2. Listen and repeat :
Listening to Arabic words or conversations is very useful for training your ear. So for the first method, you can record yourself to hear if you sound like a native speaker and compare yourself with native speakers.

You may also  listen often to Arabic Quo'ran or recorded books, and watch plenty of Arabic movies and/or TV shows in Arabic. This will train your ear to the language, and you’ll be surprised by how quickly you pick up the accent.

This is the way we learned to speak when we were young - mostly by listening to the adults talking, and repeating what they say!

You should also watch the teacher's mouth as s/he speaks in the video or in-front of you, So you could copy the speech or the word as best as you can.
As a second method practice in front of a mirror and see if you are copying the correct lip and mouth movements.

This will help you realise the difference and where u went wrong in the pronunciation to correct it better.

3. Practice, Practice, Practice ...
Ever herd of the saying : "Practice makes perfection" well, In Arabic as well .
The more you practice, the more you master the letter.
The correct way to practice Pronunciation is by saying the letters within words and sentences. By doing that, you will be practicing different vowels, shapes and positions ( beginning, middle or end) of the same letter in many words and sentences . Cause as you know letters alone do not make words and sentences.

4. Read out Loud:
Reading out loud is a great way to open paths in your mind for the new language. Reading will not only enrich your vocabulary  but it will also gets you used to these letters faster and gives you much less stress than when saying them alone.
I personally recommend starting with kids stories for its simplicity and easiness.

Note:  we will be having  kids stories soon  in our Blog 😀😄😄😁if you are interested let us know in the comments below.

5. Make friends with a native :
There are plenty of ways to have a native speaker as friend, one of them is social media! Don’t be shy to address them in Arabic! Ask them to correct you when you make a pronunciation mistake - this is a wonderful way to practice and learn the language first-hand, and also to make new friends.

At the end, I want you to know that I use these exact way to learn languages and it helped me a lot so far, And I hope it helps you as well .
Salam Alikum , Peace 🙋

Note : All Arabs no matter where they live read and understand Arabic Fosha ( AkA : Classic Arabic, Quo'ran Arabic,  Books Arabic,  formal Arabic)
